Documentary filmmaker Tyson Culver brought me in to develop and create the title sequence and graphics package for his most recent docuseries, JUICE. The series focuses on the historical and modern day issues facing our electrical grid systems, ultimately highlighting how fragile and complicated these systems can be and how serious the impacts are when things go wrong.

Aesthetically we landed on a mixed media and collage style approach to help visually intertwine the past and present. The title sequence (above) mixed old film, photos, stock, and designed elements to aid in setting the overall tone of the series. The explainer sections in the series (below) used character, collage style animations, and infographics to help visualize some of the more complex topics.

  • A digital collage showing a house on the left, an electrical plug in the middle, and another house on the right, symbolizing power connection.
  • A sepia-toned drawing of the United States Capitol building with a tall dome and classical columns, with a small drawing of a star in the top left corner.
  • A wind turbine is knocked over in a field against a background of rolling hills, with text about ideas, trends, and energy crisis.
  • A pair of scissors cutting a power line on a map of Texas with another power line nearby.
  • A blank, light beige textured background
  • Collage of vintage black-and-white photographs showing a cartoon character, electrical infrastructure, people working, and documents.
  • Infographic showing smog days in Toronto: 29 smog days per year, with city skyline and a large leaf illustration in the background.
  • A line graph titled 'US Grid Blackout Occurrences' showing incidents per year from 2000 to 2018, with fluctuations and peaks around 2010.
  • Close-up of a vanilla ice cream cone with a plain paper background.
